ICT and health + social services

One of the many things that I like about the internet is how it bridges the gap between me and millions of other people. Just one click and a pathway connecting two or more individuals is created. I remember being an advocate of Dove’s self-esteem campaign; I was a regular member of their site wherein I talked about various topics especially body image, self-confidence and the meaning of beauty.

By doing this, I think I’ve helped people see themselves better. I was not with them physically but I think my words reached them and encouraged them.

Aside from Dove’s online campaign, other significant advocacies are active online. These groups are using the internet to reach millions of people for different types of support. There are those which aim to aid underdeveloped countries such as and Make Poverty History.  The use of mixed media is now proving its efficacy as it acts as a major tool for disseminating information to the public.

Another great advantage is how the internet helps people take better care of themselves. Since the advent of the internet, more than half of the internet population is regularly searching for health or medical information. Some are searching to help family and friends while some are getting the information for their own.

Answers to immediate medical problems could instantly be found online and by this, the need to spend money for a doctor consultation is greatly decreased. The internet is a 24/7 open clinic. The convenience is just great. Money and time, saved. Searching anonymously (for those with rather embarrassing situations) is a plus as well.
