ICT and education

Education is one of the major components in achieving development. According to the World Bank, “It is one of the most powerful instruments for reducing poverty and inequality and lays a foundation for sustained economic growth.”

Globalization plus various technological changes are now determinants of a country’s status in the economic playing field.  If properly assisted, countries could take immense advantage of the opportunities offered by information communications technologies (ICTS) which can help reduce poverty and uplift educational levels.

Effectively utilizing technology in education should be given a high priority to able to use the offers of globalization.

One of the projects that are currently being pushed in different nations is education technology. This involves supplying computers and connectivity, building school labs, instruction in computer literacy, using ICT as a tool in critical thinking, evaluation, reasoning, etc.

Another is the distance learning which is a learning process that occurs in a different place from teaching which requires special techniques of course design. Distance learning is now offered by universities which helped a lot of aspiring students who cannot join classes physically.

According to educators and policymakers, “information and communication technologies are of paramount importance to the future of education.”

Information and communications technology could certainly widen the horizon for those who are kept in the dark. It can now be used to effectively disseminate information and knowledge to help educational systems.
