Education is one of the major components in achieving development. According to the World Bank, “It is one of the most powerful instruments for reducing poverty and inequality and lays a foundation for sustained economic growth.”

Globalization plus various technological changes are now determinants of a country’s status in the economic playing field.  If properly assisted, countries could take immense advantage of the opportunities offered by information communications technologies (ICTS) which can help reduce poverty and uplift educational levels.

Effectively utilizing technology in education should be given a high priority to able to use the offers of globalization.

One of the projects that are currently being pushed in different nations is education technology. This involves supplying computers and connectivity, building school labs, instruction in computer literacy, using ICT as a tool in critical thinking, evaluation, reasoning, etc.

Another is the distance learning which is a learning process that occurs in a different place from teaching which requires special techniques of course design. Distance learning is now offered by universities which helped a lot of aspiring students who cannot join classes physically.

According to educators and policymakers, “information and communication technologies are of paramount importance to the future of education.”

Information and communications technology could certainly widen the horizon for those who are kept in the dark. It can now be used to effectively disseminate information and knowledge to help educational systems.

The growing success of information and communications technology (ICT) is slowly closing the gap around the globe. By utilizing ICT, it now seems as if the world again only contains Pangaea, the supercontinent that existed during the Paleozoic and Mesozoic eras about 250 million years ago. ICT acted as a superglue, binding these different countries and forcing them to take a good look around. We are not just hearing our own music anymore; the drums of different cultural impacts are reverberating around the world creating a rhythm that is new and exciting.

One of my favorite ICT tools is the Rosetta Stone. A language-learning software which helped open my world to a variety of cultures. Rosetta Stone acted as a teacher which showed and taught me the different languages around the globe.

rosettafrench1 is another interesting tool. It is a DIY (do-it-yourself) internet site which contains different tutorial videos, my favorite section being the food and drink as it offers videos of how to make cuisines from around the globe. Yum.

One of the many things that I like about the internet is how it bridges the gap between me and millions of other people. Just one click and a pathway connecting two or more individuals is created. I remember being an advocate of Dove’s self-esteem campaign; I was a regular member of their site wherein I talked about various topics especially body image, self-confidence and the meaning of beauty.

By doing this, I think I’ve helped people see themselves better. I was not with them physically but I think my words reached them and encouraged them.

Aside from Dove’s online campaign, other significant advocacies are active online. These groups are using the internet to reach millions of people for different types of support. There are those which aim to aid underdeveloped countries such as and Make Poverty History.  The use of mixed media is now proving its efficacy as it acts as a major tool for disseminating information to the public.

Another great advantage is how the internet helps people take better care of themselves. Since the advent of the internet, more than half of the internet population is regularly searching for health or medical information. Some are searching to help family and friends while some are getting the information for their own.

Answers to immediate medical problems could instantly be found online and by this, the need to spend money for a doctor consultation is greatly decreased. The internet is a 24/7 open clinic. The convenience is just great. Money and time, saved. Searching anonymously (for those with rather embarrassing situations) is a plus as well.
